Videos where the content creator tells interesting facts, shocking facts, scary stories are very popular on video sharing platforms and social media. Fake news is not only spread in the form of articles, but also in the form of videos with untrue information.

Examples are:

  • "10 things you wouldn't have believed"
  • "These paranormal things have been happening in Florida"

These types of videos are particularly popular with children and young people.

What's wrong with that?

This content is often unsubstantiated, with no source to back it up, but is presented as fact by its creator. In this way, we can store non-factual information as fact and disseminate it.

What can we do?

  • It is very important to remind yourselves and your children that the interesting facts presented in videos and on social media platforms are not always true!
  • If you come across astonishing facts, check other sources before passing them on!
  • You should also not take for granted the fact that a person you are emotionally close to, such as your favourite vlogger, is telling us something.

Always check the facts from other sources, and make sure that several articles are not from the same source.
